Chapter 11 reading notes

Posted on: April 7, 2010

Chapter 11 gives tips on how to get along with journalists.

The relationship between public relations and the media is based on mutual cooperation, trust, and respect. However, this can sometimes be compromised by PR people. A lot of times they write a lot of hype, which doesn’t always include all of the correct information.

It is not always easy to get an editor to put your news into the media. One way to grab their attention is to give them a new light bulb along with a lamp to test its use.  Journalists often refer to these types of items as trash and trinkets. Most of them are harmless, but some can be distasteful and annoying.

A problem that editors sometimes run into is sloppy/biased reporting. A survey showed that 82 percent of people beleive that the news that is published is biased. Public Relations people sometimes have trouble understanding that the news turned in has to objective and without opinions.

I believe it is always important to have good relationships with people you work with, even if you only see them when you are in the office. It makes things so much easier when you get along with other people at work. You do your job more efficiently and you may even make some new friends.
